Announcing the Attachment Mix Tape! Track #1: "The Glory of Love"

I just watched the movie Beaches starring Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey for the first time in a decade! If you’ve never seen it, its probably one of the sweetest and most sad films made about long-term friendship ever made, but so poignant and a beautiful example of love and commitment and adult attachment. After watching the film again, I became a little obsessed with one of the songs in the film performed by Bette Midler at the end called “The Glory of Love”. My therapist friends and I are always joking about our hypothetical mix tape of “Attachment” songs, and I decided to make one and this is the first song! It contains all the elements of human attachment relationships – closeness coupled with pain, connection coupled with disconnection, rupture coupled with repair, exploring the world together but also being each other’s safe haven to return to for comfort.

Here are the lyrics:

The Glory of Love

You’ve got to give a little, take a little And let your poor heart break a little That’s the story of, That’s the glory of love

You’ve got to laugh a little, cry a little Until the clouds roll by a little That’s the story of, That’s the glory of love

As long as there’s the two of us We’ve got the world and all its charms And when the world is through with us We’ve got each other’s arms

You’ve got to win a little, lose a little Yes, and always have the blues a little That’s the story of, That’s the glory of love

That’s the story of, That’s the glory of love

The song has been recorded by many, many people since it was first recorded in 1936. I’ve copied a few of my favorites below!

First, we have Bette Midler’s version – its kind of sappy, but the most emotionally poignant. You may want to call your best friend or your parents after listening to this version!

Next, we have Jimmy Durante performing the song with a little monologue about love; very cute and will lift your spirits!

Last, but not least, my favorite version! Big Bill Broonzy takes the sappiness out of the song and makes it hummable!

If you haven’t seen Beaches, you can stream it via Instant video on Amazon or purchase it here:
